Patrick Cottrell is Associate Professor of Political Science at Linfield College in McMinnville, OR.  His research and teaching interests include: international institutions, experimental forms of governance, U.S. foreign policy, international security, sport and international politics, and leadership.  He has published in several leading peer-reviewed journals, including International Organization, the European Journal of International Relations, Foreign Policy Analysis, and the Review of International StudiesHe is currently working on two books: one on the evolution of international security institutions, which is under contract with Cambridge University Press, and another on the enduring legacies of the League of Nations under contract with Routledge.

 

Cottrell is the recipient of Linfield's Kelley Award for outstanding scholarly achievement (2009), Henberg Award for International Scholarship (2013), and Graf Faculty Achievement Award (2014) for outstanding contribution to the life of the college.  He also received a Freeman Foundation/ASIANetwork grant in 2012 to conduct collaborative research with students on the governance of refugee affairs along the Thai-Burmese border.  He is currently serving as the faculty member on the Board of Trustees at Linfield.

 

Cottrell received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007.  Before pursuing his doctorate at Wisconsin, Cottrell worked at the U.S. Department of State in the Bureaus of Political-Military Affairs and Nonproliferation.  During his government service, he also completed detail assignments as a Presidential Management Fellow on the State Department's Policy Planning Staff, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and in the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong.

 

Cottrell also has a Master of Arts in International Economics and U.S. Foreign Policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History from the University of California-Davis.

 

In his spare time, Cottrell enjoys playing or coaching any sport with a ball, batting around big ideas, and travelling.  He lives in Portland, OR with his wife and two daughters.
